Burlington Free Press: "Essex Junction Petition Seeks New Governance of Parks Dept." - August 27, 2010

School officials received a petition with more than 300 signatures this week, which touted reasons why the Essex Junction School District  should transfer the village's Recreation and Parks Department to the village government.

The Prudential Committee, which oversees the school district and the department, has declined to discuss the matter with the village Board of Trustees this fall, as the board requested in July.

"Our plates are full this fall, already," Linda Waite-Simpson, chairwoman of the committee, said at a meeting Monday. The school district needs to address the state-mandated Challenges for Change initiative before meeting with the trustees, Waite-Simpson said. She suggested meeting in April.

The petition requests that the two governing bodies "work together to achieve the transfer of governance" and "MEET AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to review all the available data required to transfer the governance" in "an orderly and timely manner."
