Then she asked me how it happened, that the swim instructors were ALL so kind and so gracious with children. She asked me, somewhat off the cuff, if they were hand picked.
I said yes.
At some point in their lives, each swim instructor or lesson guard has revealed to me their kind nature. Sometimes it happened because I was their coach when they were very young or sometimes it happened that I/we crossed paths when they were in school or out in the world and I had a moment to observe their manner with their peers. But, always, always, always, the first thing hired is kindness.
It's my good fortune to know and come across, in this world, an extraordinary amount of kindness. I am grateful to these young instructors who have taught me far more than I ever could have taught them. They are my friends, my colleagues, my mentors and we stand, equal, on a pool deck.

While the photos below are from the Summer of 2013, the kindness of our instructors is very apparent. Thanks to Kayhl Cooper, our photographer, for knowing just how to reveal that kindness to us.
